I do not want to pay their outrageous prices. Is their a knock-off company that has a collar compatible with the SD2000 system?

RULE NUMBER 1 for ALL e-collars:

If you're going to buy one - CHEAPER should never be in your vocabulary.

You DO NOT want a knock off when it comes to a shock collar. The last thing on earth you want is a cheap collar that ruins your dog because it malfunctions.

That said, I think Innotek is complete garbage. I have about $500 worth of innotek junk in a drawer - all it's good for is "dummy" collars.

I recommend a good Dogtra system, but whatever you do - LEAVE "CHEAP" at the door!!

I've never seen a poodle, lab, or collie with a spiked collar, but I see lots of Pits with them. Pit Bull owners are quick to defend what nice dogs they are, but it makes me wonder what the rationale behind the spiked collar is. Is it the owner trying to increase the dangerous look of his/her pet, or does the pet get in a lot of fights and need neck protection? Either way, either the dog or the owner - or both - are psycho.

So, what's with the spiked collars?

Guys with small you-know-what's (as well as insecure people) get pit bulls, so of course they're trying to make them look as tough as possible to cover up their own insecurity. It's the same theory as big trucks

Those things really hurt. :( If you can’t train your dog without using pain, you probably should just get a hamster and call it good.

I think if anything is hurting a dog or made to hurt a dog, it would be abuse. Animals shouldn't have to deal with pain in order to be trained.

Edit -

Yes, I have used one. Turned it up high, and it gave me a jolt that hurt. Also, I've seen my neighbor use it on her dog, pretty sure it didn't enjoy the experience.

Dogs are supposed to be man's best friend. They shouldn't be hurt. They make mistakes, just like people. Imagine going to work and getting shocked by your boss for doing something wrong. Not fun. Same with babies, people don't zap them for flinging food at the wall or crying.

However, I admit, sometimes they are necessary, as with the rattlesnakes mentioned. It all just depends on how it's being used and who's using it.

I know many people don't like the idea of using electronic shock training collars. But I also know most people don't know how to train their dogs properly which results in dogs biting people, running away and getting hit by cars. Tell me some positive stories.

In 43 years of owning, training, breeding and showing dogs, I have used an electric collar once.

We live on 180 acres, but do have a country road on 2 sides of the property. Our dogs are kept in our fenced yard unless we are working, playing or walking them.

My one dog was about 3 years old. Trained for agility and competing..basic "companion obedience". He would come when called, would "heel" or "side" when told, when released, would trot ahead of me 50 feet or so, stopping and checking periodically to make sure I was still coming. If I turned and walked the other direction, he would turn too, run to me. He would "wait up" when told, and "down" at a distance when told.

In other words: he was HIGHLY trained. I had put a LOT of time into him. And he KNEW what was allowed, and to "obey"

Well, one day, at around 3 years old, as I said, he and my daughter's dog kicked up a jack rabbit…and off they went. To the end of our property into the neighboring orchard…they would not call off. To me, this is absolutely NOT ALLOWED! Because it is dangerous. The rabbit could have run a different direction across the road….

So, I borrowed a friend's E-collar.

Only because I KNEW my dog KNEW what "Micah, come" meant.

Took a week of walking daily until we kicked up another rabbit. Off he went. I called, in my normal happy voice "Micah, come!"…no response. Gave him another chance, "Micah! COME" louder. No response. Hit the button, he stopped and jumped. Again, I said "Micah! Come" still in a happy voice. He came, I told him him "Good Boy".

End of story. Never used it again.

But…..remember, I only used it because I KNEW he KNEW what "come" meant. He was simply too caught up in the chase and chose to ignore me. And by ignoring me, he could have gotten killed.

Micah is gone now. I lost him to cancer in old age. Dear, sweet, fun buddy boy.

I have a 3 year old BC now…..who I have also invested a lot of training in and continues the tradition of our walks. So far, she has called off groound squirrels immediately.

I would never use an e-collar for "training". I do not feel it is right, nor fair to shock a dog if the trainer hasn't already taught the dog "what to do"….If I didn't think I could control my dog off leash, I would not allow my dog off leash, as I had not done my job.

My boyfriend bought a really thick and heavy collar for his dog claiming it will "make her stronger." I think it's a terrible thing to do… is there a max amount of weight that a dog's collar can be? I think thisw falls very closely with animal cruelty, but I am not sure.

No, this is cruel and unusual punishment. Look at what happened to Vic. Stay strong and let your boyfriend know that this is a no-brainer……it's your way or the highway for him! You are CORRECT to think "this is a terrible thing to do". Why does he think this will make the dog stronger???? It will certainly turn the dog MEAN. Animal Cruelty…YES! Tell him to read the stories being covered by Fox & CNN on Vic & maybe he will come to his senses.
IF NOT….I would turn him in if I were you and find a new boyfriend. If he is mean to his dog…he will certainly be mean/cruel to you. Stay safe. Blessings, Patti

I notice at a walmart that dog collars that kills fleas & ticks is 2.99 dollars while the cat fleas & tick cost up to 4.99 dollars.

It is the same brand and collar, noting fancy at all, when I asked they said it is the correct price and don’t know why the cats collar is a bit more expensive.

Is there a difference? or is it all the same?

cats rule!

flea collars do not really work (as in kill or repel) when i did use them many, many years ago the only thing i notice is they attracted the fleas to it that were on the animal (not kill). I would suggest a good flea bath & then using something like Program (which will sterilize the flea & then they die without producing more) or Frontline Plus. The only thing a flea collar is good for is when your fishing it does help repel mosquitoes.

I was just recently given some dog flea collars and I was wondering if my cats could use them? I have no clue if it would be harmful at all. Thanks.

They would be too big for the kitty cats :0)

I have no tape measure or ruler so i don't know what to do. My dogs are a kelpie, cattle dog and a fox terrier. Please help! How can i measure without tape or a ruler? Or does anyone have these dogs and know the cm's?

You know what I do when i can't find a tape? I use a piece of regular letter size paper. I fold it in half, and then again. For someitn like a collar, cut a strip lengthwize. Wrap the strip around the dog's neck. The folds will give you the fractions.
I can figure pretty close with just a sheet of paper.

I have a pitt and he keep breaking all his collars. I need something that has the clasp and the seperate ring in the middle for leashing him to his running line. I need something that will last and that will be super strong!!!!!!!! Does anyone know where on the net I can buy one??????

I need to buy a new Martingale collar for my German Shepherds. I don't remember where I purchased the ones I'm currently using. They are very heavy duty and well made. I've found several on line sources for Martingale collars but I cannot determine if they are of the same quality as the ones I now have.

Do you use a Martingale collar? Where did you buy yours?
