You have been probably been hearing the request from your children “Please can we have a puppy?” Owning a dog is a big responsibility and it can be a perfect venue in which to teach your children. However, there are a few things to consider before adopting a dog into your family. You and your family will have to come up with a game plan in advance and agree to what your new furry family member can and cannot do in your home.

First of all, you must make sure your house is dog-proofed.  A good way to do this is to crouch down and look for perils like dangling electrical cords that would be great for chewing; pick toys and other small objects off the floor that could be harmful if swallowed; remove chemicals, paper sacks, plastic items and even plants away from the prying jaws of a dog. Area rugs should be removed while your new pet is being house trained. He shouldn’t feel that this is the perfect spot to eliminate!

If you are looking for an excellent guide to potty train your new puppy, visit Potty Training A Puppy.

Invest in a baby gate for those areas in your home where you do not want your new pooch to wander. It also could also be used to cordon off a special place just for him. This is especially helpful in the house training front. Also, dogs, especially puppies are curious and love to explore. To prevent your dog from chewing your shoes and clothes, make sure that he can’t access them. Close your bedroom door or closet door.

Dogs love to chew so make sure you buy some chew toys or rawhide bones to curb his gnawing instincts. While your puppy is teething, make sure he has safe toys to chew on so he won’t be tempted to chew on objects around your home. As well, buy lots of toys to keep him amused. A bored dog can be a destructive dog! Most dogs love tug ropes, plush dog toys, squeaker toys, and rubber balls. As with human children, you should give your dog toys that are appropriate for his age. Also, buy enough toys so that you can rotate them periodically so that your dog doesn’t become bored.

Lay some ground rules in advance of bringing your puppy home. Can he jump onto the furniture? Will you allow him in your bedroom? Where do you plan for him to sleep? You will want to know that in advance so that you can put his dog bed there. Are you willing to be adaptable and change your game plan somewhat? Occasionally, dogs will latch on to a favorite spot in the house and if it is your bedroom, you will either have to train him to sleep elsewhere, or allow him to sleep on his dog bed in there. Dogs come with a unique personality and also a number of quirks, just like humans. You need to be able to adjust.

You should also have a game plan in place for obedience training. An obedient dog is a great family member.  As well, you will get so much more out of the doggie-human relationship if you invest in dog obedience training. You will need to decide whether you want to use a training school or want to take on the job yourself.

Secrets to Dog Training is the best online dog training guide. To check it out visit, Secrets to Dog Training Review.

You also need to plan for the times when you are away from the home? Have you thought about getting a vet? Would you hire a dog sitter or board him in a kennel if you had to travel? Will your dog have a good sized back yard in which to run? How about exercise? Do you intend to walk your dog so he can socialize with other dogs? These are all essential considerations that must be thought about before you adopt a dog.

Dog Food Secrets - Learn the facts every dog owner should know

I have decided to write a review about Dog Food Secrets to raise people’s awareness of the negative impact of some commercial dog foods on the lifespan of our dogs. Andrew Lewis makes some highly controversial claims in his top selling package, Dog Food Secrets. If even only half of his statements are true, we all need to be concerned and aware about the quality of the food we are feeding our pets.

If you are interested in learning more about this fantastic guide, take a look at: Dog Food Secrets

Andrew Lewis claims that:

  • Dog Food Secrets offers a simple solution proven to increase the lifespan of your dog by up to 134% and save dog owners up to $10,000 in veterinary bills and food costs.
  • Our dogs are dying early due to the ingredients in most commercially produced dog foods. The average North American dog lives 11 years, however the life expectancy for a dog living under optimal conditions is 27 years.
  • It is claimed that many commercially manufactured pet foods contain dangerous chemicals and are nutritionally deficient.
  • Dog aggression can be increased by the chemicals in commercially produced dog food.

The package includes:

Dog Food Secrets offers three packages: Bronze ($27), Silver ($37), ad Gold ($47). The Gold package includes the confidential Dog Food Report.

Here are just a few of the great many of topics covered in this extensive guide to maximize your dog’s health, vigor and life expectancy:

  • Six vital ingredients for dog health
  • Dog health care (including perfect body temperature, heart beat and respiration for your dog; how to prevent and treat heartworm; tests for intestinal worms and parasites)
  • Top fruit treats
  • 55 nutritious recipes dogs love
  • 20 human foods deadly to dogs
  • The number of calories your dog should be consuming
  • 5 vaccinations dogs must have
  • Checklist for 18 most common dental diseases

My Conclusions:

The information in this package is certainly disturbing and shocking. I have no way of knowing whether all of his statements about commercial pet food are true as I haven’t taken a look at the scientific evidence.

That said, Dog Food Secrets does provide great suggestions for feeding and taking care of your dog, plus nourishing recipes which will hopefully extend your dog’s life.

Andrew Lewis is so sure that you will really like his package that you can get a 100% refund and still get to keep the whole package!

I strongly recommend that you take a look at Dog Food Secrets for the sake of your dog’s health.

Dog Training

Dog Training

Though dog-human interaction goes back thousands of years, communication between the two is still sometimes rough. The human half of the pair is usually the smarter party, but watching the usual training sessions one can have legitimate reason to wonder.

Dogs understand and respond at roughly the mental level of a human two-year-old, but there the similarity ends. Their senses operate differently - their color vision has a different response pattern to reds and greens, for example, and obviously their noses are infinitely more sensitive - and their minds process information differently as well. Anyone training dogs has to take this into account in order to avoid human frustration and canine misbehavior.

Dogs are pack animals by nature. Descendant from wolves - where even the ‘lone wolf’ is an anomaly - they’re social and function best with active interplay and within a strict hierarchy.

So, set aside half-an-hour per day, an hour would be better, for at least the first few months of training. Start training your dog as soon as possible. Puppy training sometimes can be started as early as four weeks old.

Elimination (’potty’) training details we leave for elsewhere, but all training follows similar guidelines.

Establish your pack dominance early on. Dogs have a hierarchy - there are alpha dogs, beta dogs, and on down to the omega. For a sane household, and a well-adjusted dog, the human (whether male or female) must always be the alpha male of the pack.

Depending on the breed, this will be either more difficult or easier. Like humans, some are simply more assertive than others. Leashes, collars, commands and other training aids are all highly useful but most important is attitude. Never let your dog be the boss.

You do not have to enforce your dominance with physical force. Sometimes, used appropriately, that will be necessary. Usually, simply being firm and willing to wait for compliance will be enough.

For many, placing them on their backs when young and placing a firm hand in the middle of the chest until they lower their paws - a sign of submission - will be enough. With some, reinforcing this by putting your face close to theirs, emulating dominant dog behavior, can help.

Keep the leash short to discourage your dog to run, and pay attention to you. Allow plenty of time for free running behavior, essential to dog health, but that’s before or after training, not during. At least, not at first.

Start simply by choosing short, clear commands that sound distinctly different: sit, stay, down, come. Use a firm voice when addressing your dog. You’re in charge, but not angry. Avoid double-word commands like ’sit down’ or ’stay down’. This sounds too much alike and may confuse your dog.

Accompany each verbal command with the same tone, look and hand gesture. Eventually these can separate, but at first it’s essential to provide the simplest, most consistent form of communication.

Just like two-year old humans, dogs have limited capacity for grasping the subtleties of language. Assist their understanding by rigid consistency. Don’t use a single command word to mean more than one thing. ‘Down’ can mean ‘don’t jump on me or anyone else’, or it can mean ‘get on your stomach’, but it has to mean one thing only.

Be clear, be patient and be committed and the result will be a dog who trusts and listens to you. And that makes it worth the effort. Find more on dog training at Luvurdog.com/dogtraining

When you want to buy dog bed one of the first things you need to do is measure your dog so you can be sure to get a bed that is the right size for your pet. First measure them from the tip of their nose to the tip of their tail and then measure from their head to the floor. This will give you the idea of the length and width you require in a dog bed. If you are looking at a bed with a mattress add 12 inches to your measurements.

Once you know what size you need you can look at the various styles. To select a bed from the various styles that are available in the market you need to closely observe their sleeping habits. What is the place that your dog likes to rest? In what position does he sleep in? Does your dog head straight for a soft cushioned spot after a day outdoors? If so he may need a bed with extra support to cushion his joints after a long day at play. Maybe at the end of the day you always find your dog lying on his back on your bed snoozing. If this is the case your pooch may like a soft, large roomy place to crash like a lounging bed. If you usually find your dog curled up while sleep your best bet would be a nestling bed. Soft and plush with higher walls or sides for support help your dog feel safe and protected.

As your dog gets older you may have to consider one of the many orthopedic style dog beds because they will give more support for those old aching bones. Several these choices have memory foam that adjusts to the requirements of your dog. Dog beds come in a range of styles too and it is up to you as to the style you opt for. Several of the styles you will get, incorporate dog couches, the traditional round beds, and donut style and slipper versions.

Once you have found out the perfect size and style of bed for your dog you need to consider just a few more things. Will this bed be used outside? Do you need one when travelling? Dog beds come in styles that will stand up to the elements and fold compactly for portability. Next choose what type of filling you want in the bed based on the amount of support your dog needs. Once you have checked with all the above you can check out with the prices. When investing in a dog bed it is important to get one made with quality that will fit your dog and actually be used by your dog. One of the best ways to comparison shop is by shopping online. These online shops have low overhead costs and they do not have to pay for the utilities so they can sell cheap and still manage to make profit. You can easily see what is available in the world of dog beds. Who knew there was such variety?

Finally you can choose the pattern of the covering of your dog bed to add final, fun touch and match your décor. Also some manufacturers even offer the option of adding your pet’s name to the bed. While shopping for dog beds like Italian Iron Palace Luxury Pet Bed it is important to take everything into consideration to find the perfect bed that your dog will love. Also you want your best friend to be well rested for another day of fun and frolic.

The most familiar pet troubles mainly caused by unsafe parasites like fleas and ticks. Parasite is an organism that largely relies upon their host. In reality, there is no disease truly common in Dachshunds The overwhelming majority are born healthy and live long, mostly disease-free lives. Some minor health issues arise for nearly every dog at some point, even those who receive early vaccinations and excellent life-long care.

Nevertheless, there are some conditions that tend to occur more frequently in Dachshunds that in other breeds.

Problems with the Adrenal Gland

One common disease of the adrenal gland is hyperadrenocorticism, or Cushing’s Disease. In Cushing’s Disease, too much of the cortisol hormone is produced, either by a primary tumor or the adrenal gland, or a malfunction of the pituitary gland, which is the master gland that tells the adrenal gland how much cortisol to produce. The elevated cortisol level results in excessive drinking and urination, a pot-bellied appearance, skin conditions, hair loss and some times diabetes. Special lab tests are conducted to measure cortisol and the adrenal glands capability to produce cortisol. Several drugs are can be used to decrease the level of cortisol. Occasionally, surgery may be needed to remove the adrenal gland if it is cancerous. Cushing’s disease can affect other breeds of dogs as well.

The opposite condition is called Addison’s disease or hypoadrenocorticsim (low cortisol). Whereas, Cushing’s takes some time to present itself, Addison’s disease is a sudden episode of collapse due to an imbalance of the electrolytes and too low of glucose (blood sugar). The sudden illness results in an emergency visit to the veterinarian to correct the imbalances with fluid therapy and cortisone injections. Being as the sudden collapse resembles many disorders, Addison’s is the most difficult disease to diagnose. Specialized blood tests are needed to identify both Cushing’s and Addison’s Disease. Prednisone and electrolyte supplements will be needed for life long treatment of Addison’s disease.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)

Several eye diseases can affect Dachshunds, such as cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy. PRA is a gradual deterioration of the retina, the back wall of the eye. This  results in slow vision loss and eventual blindness. PRA is a genetic trait, and since it is a slow, progressive disease,  these dogs are sometimes bred before the disease is diagnosed, thus perpetuating the disease. Regretfully, there is no cure or treatment for PRA. Other eye diseases that can affect Dachshunds are cataracts, glaucoma, optic nerve hypoplasia, distichiasis (abnormal eyelashes) as well as other conditions. Regular eye exams can help detect these eye-disorders early.

Intervertebral Disc Disease

By far the most common disease of Dachshunds is related to the discs between the vertebrae (the bones of the spine). The disc provides a cushion between the bones of the back (spine) and is normally gelatinous. In Dachshunds, this material sometimes ruptures and sometimes calcifies, or hardens. The herniated disc causes swelling and pain around the spinal cord and the nerves coming out from the spinal canal. Early signs of a herniated disc are pain, a reluctance to jump up, partial paralysis and sometimes total paralysis or the rear legs,. The majority of them with disc disease can be managed medically with anti-inflammatory medications and pain medication. Holistic medicine, such as chiropractic manipulation and acupuncture, is sometimes used to relieve the pain. Immediate surgery to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord may help restore full function in the legs when there is a complete rupture resulting in total paralysis. The faster the surgery is performed, the better the chances of full recovery.

Experimental treatment is being tested that uses laser heat to fuse the disc material in the spine to prevent the rupture. Being as this is such a common problem in the Dachshund, I do recommend purchasing health insurance for your pet. Spinal surgery for herniated discs is very expensive and I have had the uneasy task of performing euthanasia on several Dachshunds because the owner’s were unable to pay for the surgery. Over time, a few of my patients there were partially paralyzed did recover some function of their legs. There is no way to predict which dogs will recover without the surgery.

Vaccination Reactions

Allergic reactions to vaccinations does seem to occur in the Dachshund more often than any other breed. Usually, the reaction is minor, resuling in swelling of the muzzle and face and sometimes hives. Occasional vaccine reactions can occur with any dog so it is always a good idea to observe your pet for a few hours after their shots. Vaccines have improved over the past few years so reactions are fewer and the benefits of protecting your pet against the diseases outweighs the risks.

Dachshunds can lead a very long and healthy life, sometimes upward to 15 years. Vaccinations, proper diets, preventive health checks, heartworm and parasite prevention, and good dental care can help your Doxie live longer.  You can find more information concerning your dogs health at LuvUrDog.com as well Dachshund breed gifts.

Dachshunds are independent. They are loving. Doxies like to play. Dachshunds are aggressive.

How can all this be true of one dog breed? Well it is. Dachshunds are among the most interesting and complex breeds because they encompass all these attributes and many more besides.

Bred in Germany to chase vermin in the 1600s, bold and fearless characteristics were selected first and foremost. At the same time, they had to be strong-willed, resourceful and persistent. If the dog doesn’t have the spirit of pursuit, it does little good to have feet and legs that are excellent for digging.

Those attributes have been handed down through the centuries. Most Doxies today are pets, not hunters, once attributes are bred in their nature does not change much. What is simple courage in one circumstance can be considered aggression in another. What can be vaulable persistence in one situation can be considered willfulness in another.

Dachshunds are an intelligent breed. Being as they have an individualist charcter, they are more difficult to take an interest in training. If handled correctly, their smarts allow them to excel in whatever they do.

Keep in mind that independence does not necessarily mean they are uninterested in others. Dachshunds are filled with curiosity and want to take part in any adventure going on around them. Some breeds are satisified to sit by observing quietly. They want to be in the middle of things, participating along with everyone else.

Variations are noted within these broad outlines.

The Smooth-Coat exhibits all the classic behaviors - leading the pack whenever possible, barking at the least invasion to its territory and more. It will be reluctant more often to take a bath and struggle during nail clipping time.

The Wire-Hair type acts and looks like a combination of terrier and Doxie. Terriers, also, are high strung. They love to play and their behavior is not aggressive so much as just forthright.

The Long-Hair Doxie is more like the Irish Setter in miniature, though not to that extreme. Although they enjoy a good romp, they are a little more inclined to watch and wait their turn. Though they take a bit more grooming care, they are among the easier varieties to train.

Dachshunds are natural diggers. Bred to chase badgers and other small game into a den, they like getting into things. Their muscular chest and powerful front legs make it pretty easy for them to do just that. Thanks to the streamlined body and smooth, narrow head, getting out isn’t too much more difficult. As a result, if you want to keep the garden or lawn intact, don’t allow the Doxie to roam freely without supervision.

Having natural energy, Doxies do need at least moderate exercies in activities. An obstacle course with tunnels is a good idea for these “gophers”.

Doxies are also loyal and loving. The bond between a Dachshund and the person or family it adopts is unusually strong. Doxies want to be near people and enjoy interaction. As any owner will be happy to tell you……..

As a human, flying is sometimes one of the most nerve-wracking experiences, even when you know it is safe, efficient and generally very pleasant. If flying can be that troubling for humans, we can only imagine how tough it is on our pets. Both dogs and cats can be transported by plane, as can many other types of pets, providing they are in the correct and approved crates or cages.

Preparing your pet for a safe airplane journey does require some advance preparation that can help minimize the stress that your pet experiences. The tips that follow will work with dogs, cats and most other types of pets. Prior to the trip, a trip to the dog groomers is a nice way to begin

Food and Exercise

It is important to restrict both food and water for approximately 12 hours before a flight. This means that the pet should be fed normally and on schedule and then kept from food or water for approximately half a day. If you only feed once a day in the morning and if you are not flying out until the next afternoon you may wish to adjust the feeding schedule to the evening at least a week before the flight to avoid the pet going for over 24 hours without food or water. Withholding food and water for 12 hours will prevent messes in the carrier and will also prevent vomiting and possible choking concerns while the pet is in the air.

Exercise the pet really well before they are put in the crate or carrier to get on the flight. Most pets are used to moving around a lot during the day or night and being confined in the carrier will be a bit stressful itself. Cats can be enticed to chase a piece of string or play with a favorite toy before going in the crate and dogs can always go for a long walk, jog or play time before travel.

Make the crate positive

For a person, a crate or carrier seems confining and restrictive, but for a dog, cat or other pet it can be a safe, relaxing and comfortable place. If the pet already sleeps in the crate or carrier at home or when staying at a dog boarding facility, your work is done as the pet sees this as his or her den. If the crate or carrier is new, start encouraging the pet to spend time in there by placing some tasty treats, toys and comfortable bedding in the crate and praising the pet for spending time in the crate.

Use puppy pads in the crate

Placing highly absorbent puppy pads, on the bottom of the crate will help keep any accidents away from the pet. Covering the puppy pads with a thick towel or blanket will help as well. If you are traveling with a cat, invest in one of the small, travel sized litter boxes that can be attached to the side of the crate that will provide a bathroom area as well as a dry, clean place to sleep.

Finally, try to stay as calm as possible yourself. Your pets are very attune to your emotional state and if you are nervous they are much more likely to pick up on your emotional state.

Who is Dove Cresswell?

Dove is a professional Hollywood North dog trainer with an outstanding career as a dog trainer for movies, television and commercials.

At 25 years of age, she has already been involved in training various dog breeds for over 10 years. In addition, she has trained other animals species including rodents, deer, birds, cougars, and large reptiles.

As a dog trainer for films, she is expected to deliver immediate results as time is money in the movie business. Equally fast results can be expected from her multimedia dog training course.

Click here to get this excellent dog training course: Dove Cresswell.

What is Covered?

The online dog training course, which is audio and video format, offers the following 7 lessons:

  • Puppy House Training / Potty Training
  • Dog Obedience Training
  • Crate Training
  • Walking Politely on a Leash: The Informal Heel
  • The Recall
  • Good Puppy & Dog Manners
  • Special Dog Tricks

The lesson on puppy house training offers tips for both toy breeds and larger breeds.

What I Particularly Liked

The enjoyable lessons quickly get to the point. The correct methods for dog training are clearly articulated in the well-illustrated slides and narration. The multimedia format definitely has its advantages as dog owners can see the correct positions for themselves and their dogs, plus they can hear the voice tones to be used. This is where this online dog training course has an advantage over an e-book.

Although this course is not as extensive as some of the dog obedience e-books in areas such as dog behavior issues and specific dog breed information, it is full of informative and well-presented dog obedience and house training advice for dog owners.

Paper training is explored by Dove in an interesting and logical way. She believes that this is not a good practice as it is confusing for dogs. She explains in a very knowledgeable and easily understood way how puppies can be trained to always eliminate outside.

Extra Bonuses

You will be able to e-mail Dove with your own dog behavior issues once you have bought the course:

  • Teach your dog to fetch
  • Train your dog to play soccer
  • Train your dog to play hide ‘n seek
  • Information on dog sports
  • Choosing the right toys for your dog
  • Earning your dog’s respect
  • Choosing the right dog food and treats

My Conclusions

Initially, I was quite shocked that only seven lessons were offered in this first-rate program; however, my opinion quickly changed once I actually heard the course and discovered the extensive amount of information covered in each lesson. I found this multimedia online dog training program most enjoyable; so much so that I would have liked it to have lasted longer. The lessons are very simple to follow and you can emulate the techniques to train your own dog as effectively as the professional dog trainer.

The only downside with this course is that it’s only accessible online so you need an internet connection to be able to view it.  It is for this reason that I have given it a 4 ½  star rating. If the course was also offered as an e-book, I would have gladly given it 5 stars.

This course would be ideal for all dog owners wanting a first rate dog training guide, however, I feel that it is especially appealing to people who find ebooks boring.  So you know what your getting in advance, you are allowed to take a look at a sample lesson prior to buying the course.

I strongly recommend that you take a look at Dove Cresswell’s outstanding course for all your dog training needs: Dove Cresswell.
